Celebrating Ethiopian New Year in Brooklyn: Join Us for the Festivities

Best Ethiopian platter

While much of the world celebrates New Year’s Eve on December 31st, Ethiopians follow a unique calendar that runs seven years behind the Gregorian calendar. This Thursday, Ethiopia welcomes 2018, and at Bati Ethiopian Kitchen, we’re bringing the traditions and flavors of this special holiday to Brooklyn.

What Ethiopian New Year Means:

Known as Enkutatash, Ethiopian New Year is celebrated in September at the end of the rainy season. It marks renewal, harvest, and new beginnings. Families and friends gather to share meals, exchange flowers, and celebrate the promise of a fresh year.

Our Celebration at Bati:

To honor this tradition, we’re hosting a New Year’s Dinner Party on Friday night. Expect the warmth of Ethiopian hospitality, live music, and a menu filled with celebratory dishes:

Doro Wot-the iconic chicken stew

Kitfo- seasoned beef tartare, a festive favourite

Engudai Kitfo – our vegan mushroom version.

Plus plenty of injera, drinks like honey wine Tej and a festive atmosphere.

Why Celebrate With Us:

This holiday is about more than food,  it’s about community, joy, and sharing culture. Whether you’re Ethiopian, curious about new traditions, or just love a good party, you’re welcome at our table.
